A batch sim drafts thousands of fantasy rosters against a full field of AI opponents, then replays every one of those rosters against real NFL box scores from past seasons to see how often the build finishes as a top seed, wins the whole thing, or craters. Run the same seasons and the same opponent pool for two different draft plans, changing one rule at a time, and you get about as clean a test as you can run for whether a strategy actually works. Here we're pitting wr-then-rb (force a WR in round 1, then RB for four straight rounds, ADP the rest of the way) against adp-baseline (just take the best player on the board by ADP, every round) — 1,000,000 drafts each, across the 2020-2025 seasons, 10-team PPR.
Verdict: Situational
Across all six seasons combined, wr-then-rb beats plain ADP on every headline tier — Top Seed, Top-4 Seed, Champion. But don't get too excited: almost all of that edge comes from one season. 2024 was a monster year for this build, and in four of the other five years it's a wash with baseline or it loses outright. The edge also depends a lot on where you're picking from — it's real at the front of the draft and mostly gone by the middle. A strategy that only looks good because of one great year and good draft position isn't something you can trust blindly. It's situational.
Overall comparison (pooled, all seasons)
| Tier | wr-then-rb | adp-baseline | Diff |
|---|
| Top Seed | 12.32% | 11.08% | +1.24pp |
| Top-4 Seed | 45.06% | 43.21% | +1.85pp |
| Champion | 11.01% | 10.78% | +0.23pp |
| Worst Team (Bottom Seed) | 8.15% | 8.17% | -0.02pp |
| Bottom-4 Seed | 35.30% | 36.35% | -1.04pp |
| First-Round Playoff Exit | 40.28% | 39.86% | +0.42pp |
| Points For (avg) | 1815.76 | 1808.57 | +7.19 |
Top Seed and Top-4 Seed have a real edge here. Champion and the bad outcomes (Bottom Seed, First-Round Exit) are close enough to call a wash. Points scored is a little higher too.
Comparison by year

|---|
| 2020 | 34.32% | 43.19% | -8.87pp | -4.45pp | -0.65pp | -33.25 |

| 2025 | 37.88% | 42.57% | -4.69pp | -3.26pp | -1.19pp | -12.97 |
2024 isn't just wr-then-rb's best season — it's not close. Every tier, every year, 2024 dwarfs the rest by an order of magnitude. Pull it out of the sample and the strategy loses Top-4 Seed in four of the remaining five years, and loses Top Seed in all five. The "win" in the table above is really a 2024 story wearing a six-season costume.

| 10 | 9.90% | 9.74% | +0.16pp | -0.73pp | -3.01pp |
That's a real pattern, not just draft-order noise — it shows up the same way across all three tiers. Slots 1-5 have a clear edge over baseline (biggest at slots 3 and 4), and it flattens out or flips negative from slot 6 on, worst of all at slot 10's Champion rate (-3.01pp, which is a big bite out of a ~10-12% base rate). Makes sense when you think about it: forcing an elite WR and then four straight RBs works best when the board is still stacked — i.e., picking near the front. Draft from the middle or back and that same forced sequence means settling for whatever's left instead of what ADP says is actually the best player available, so the edge shrinks or disappears.
Why the slot effect happens
Two things going on here. First, that forced round-1 WR doesn't cost the same at every slot. The elite WR tier stays flat through about pick 6, so from slots 3-5 you're "forced" into a stud (Chase, CeeDee Lamb, Jefferson) while only giving up an RB2 or RB3. From slots 7-10, that same rule gets you a tier-two WR instead — and what you're passing up can be an elite RB who slid right into baseline's lap. The 2023 numbers make this obvious: CMC posts a 90.1% Top-4 rate whenever a wr-then-rb roster lands him, but the WR lock only let that happen 181 times out of a million drafts. Baseline drafters at slots 6-10 just take him in round 1, no lock required.
Second, where your forced RB picks land matters. 2024 is the cleanest example: Henry, Achane, and Kamara went at picks 18.3, 23.2, and 37.9 on average that year, and slots 3 and 4's forced RB windows landed almost exactly there. Mid-slot wr-then-rb rosters in 2024 were basically Chase plus those three RBs by pure coincidence of pick math. Slot 10 doesn't get that luck — its forced RB picks fall right after the RB run, once the board's already been picked clean, so it's stuck reaching for scraps.
Slots 1 and 2 land in between — good but not great — because the trade you're making (best WR on the board for the consensus 1.1 RB) is basically a coin flip that depends on the year. It paid off huge in 2024 (that year's 1.1, CMC, got hurt), but in 2020, 2023, and 2025 the 1.1 RB (Kamara, CMC again, Bijan) was exactly the right pick, so wr-then-rb only breaks even there.
One big caveat: this whole slot table is pooled across six seasons, and 2024 already carries most of the weight everywhere else in this report. Given how neatly the 2024 RB cluster lines up with slots 3-5's pick math, a good chunk of that edge is probably a 2024 fluke, not something you can count on every year.
Who's actually driving the tiers
Zoom into who's actually carrying each tier, and the 2024 story checks out. Look at the top-20 contributor lists for Top Seed, Top-4 Seed, and Champion that year, and almost every name — whether it's a forced pick (the round-1 WR, the round 2-5 RBs) or just an ADP pickup from round 6 on — outperforms the same player on baseline rosters, sometimes by 3x or more. Derrick Henry (the forced round-2 RB) hits Top Seed 49.1% of the time on wr-then-rb rosters, versus just 18.9% when baseline happens to land him. Chase runs 43.0% versus baseline's 15.1% for the same guy. Even Malik Nabers, a plain round-6 ADP pickup with nothing forced about him, hits Champion at 40.9% versus 23.8% on baseline — more on why below.
Every other season is a quieter story. Take 2020: Kamara (a forced round-2 RB) hits Top Seed at 21.4% on wr-then-rb rosters — actually worse than the 23.5% baseline gets with the same guy, meaning ADP found him just fine on its own. Across 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2025, contributors split roughly evenly between "this build actually did something" and "ADP would've landed him anyway," and plenty of the shared names do worse under wr-then-rb than under baseline — which lines up with those years' negative numbers overall. 2021 is mildly positive but nothing like 2024. Bottom line: the headline number in this report is a 2024 story, not a wr-then-rb story.
Why 2024 specifically — the real-world reason, not just simulation noise. Both builds draft by plain ADP from round 6 on, so anything that happens after that is available to both strategies equally. The 75.5% vs. 38.5% Top-4 gap has to come from rounds 1-5, where the builds actually diverge — and 2024 was a weird year at exactly those rounds. Chase (the forced round-1 WR) won the receiving triple crown and finished as the overall WR1. Meanwhile the season's best RB seasons — Henry, Achane, Kamara, Gibbs, Barkley — mostly happened at picks that fell in the forced round-2-to-4 window instead of at 1.1. Basically, 2024 was the one year where "receiver first, then four RBs" matched what actually worked in real life. Compare that to 2020, 2022, 2023, or 2025, where the right move at the top of the draft was grabbing an elite RB immediately (Kamara, CMC, Bijan) — exactly what forcing a WR in round 1 stops you from doing.
That still leaves the late-round names — Brock Bowers, Jayden Daniels, Joe Burrow — showing up strong despite not being forced picks at all. 2024 really was a great year for late QB and TE value on its own: Bowers set the rookie receiving record out of a typical TE1-in-round-8-to-10 price tag, Daniels was a top-5 QB from a round 8-9 price, and Burrow led all QBs in scoring from a round 5-6 price. But since both builds draft that stretch of the board identically, that value alone can't be what separates them. More likely, a great round-6-plus pick is a symptom, not a cause — it shows up on rosters that already have a strong core from rounds 1-5, and just pushes an already-good team over a tier line. The real story is still in those first five rounds.
Does this hold up elsewhere?
We also ran the same matchup with one league setting changed at a time.
Half-PPR, 10 teams. This one's a matched-pairs test (both builds share the same seed, half-ppr-10team-1m), so it's the most trustworthy comparison in this whole report. wr-then-rb still edges baseline: Top Seed +0.73pp (12.50% vs 11.77%), Top-4 Seed +2.80pp (46.57% vs 43.76%), Champion +0.67pp (10.87% vs 10.20%) — smaller and steadier than the full-PPR numbers above, and it also cuts down on bad outcomes (Bottom Seed -1.62pp, Bottom-4 Seed -3.12pp). Points scored is up 14.32.
12 teams, PPR. Weaker test here (different seeds for each build), but the edge is basically gone regardless: Top Seed is a wash (+0.08pp), Top-4 Seed is a wash (+0.66pp), and Champion actually goes negative for wr-then-rb (-1.19pp, 7.82% vs 9.01% — about a 13% relative drop). Whatever this build has going for it at 10 teams, it doesn't carry over to a bigger league.
League settings and strategy context
Primary comparison: both runs are 10-team PPR, 2020-2025, 1,000,000 sims apiece. wr-then-rb's seed (auto-1786037063266) is different from adp-baseline's (auto-1786037346483) — both auto-generated, which makes this an independent-samples comparison rather than matched pairs. Take the by-season and by-slot swings with a little more salt than you would from a shared-seed test. The half-PPR variant above does share a seed between the two builds (matched pairs); the 12-team variant doesn't (independent, same as the primary).
wr-then-rb ("WR-RB Ladder (test)") forces a WR in round 1 and an RB in rounds 2-5, then goes ADP with a role-fill boost from round 6 on. adp-baseline ("ADP Baseline (test)") just takes best-available by ADP the whole way, with a role-fill boost starting round 9. Both pick between their top 2 candidates by score, weighted 80/20 toward the better one. Every other seat at the table is filled by the normal production bot archetypes, not this test persona — they're simplified stand-ins for opponents, not a promise about what your real leaguemates will do.
Caveats: these are simulated drafts against simulated opponents, replayed over real historical box scores — they can't capture in-season news, trades, or waiver moves, and the bots filling the other seats are simplified archetypes, not real people. Because the primary comparison uses different seeds for each build, some of the season-to-season and slot-to-slot swings could just be draw variance rather than a real strategy effect. That said, the 2024 gap is big enough — and shows up consistently enough across tiers and individual players — that it looks like more than noise.
Appendix: Full top-20 contributor tables
What "Rate" means: out of every simulated roster that drafted this player, Rate is the share that landed in this tier. A 40% Rate on the Champion table means 40% of the sims where a wr-then-rb roster had this guy, that team won the league. It's not proof the player alone did it — good rosters tend to have good players — but a high Rate is a strong sign of who's actually carrying the strategy's numbers in that season/tier. Round is the average round that player came off the board (ceil(avgOverallPick / 10)).
